Book Review By Louisa Eggleton
Hidden Meanings by Charlotte Vale Allen

Wynne Shipton is an anonymous writer, living almost as a hermit in a small country town in England. Her daily thrill is to watch a man who lives up the road run past her house every morning, and to wave wordless hello's to each other.
One day, a package for her is delivered to his house, so he goes over there to deliver it and introduce himself.

A relationship between Wynne and Charlie soon ensues.
He finds out that she's a bit of a nut case, with low self-esteem and commitment issues. This is due to the fact that she married very young, had a baby at 16, found her husband to be abusive, and then when she found out that she was pregnant with another one, checked herself into a mental hospital to have the child aborted.

She divorced her husband, leaving him with the child and responsibilities. Charlie encourages her to see her ex-husband and organise a party in order that she can see her daughter, named Tamara, without her actually knowing that Wynne is her mother.

Charlie and Wynne go to the party as Tamara's father's clients. Wynne is left wanting to see more of her daughter but not knowing how to start a relationship.

Tamara has a loveless marriage to a guy doing drugs, so divorces him, taking her child Vickie with her. She moves into the house across the road from Charlie and Wynne (who have since moved in with each other).

Wynne and Tamara strike up a great relationship, without Tamara knowing that her friend is really her mother.

While trying to obtain a passport, Tamara finds out that Wynne is her mother and is devastated. However, after taking some time out in Italy where she misses her family so much, she goes back home to see her mother and all is well!
