Sometimes I Forget To Breathe by Toni Alexander

At the age of five, Shawana Mills saw her father kill a man in cold blood. Her father ordered her not to tell. Her fear of him guaranteed his secret - until now.
As Shawana's father gradually disappeared from the home, her mother's undiagnosed mental illness progressed. Shawana was subjected to violent mental and physical abuse at the hands of her mother, as well as her siblings.
At the age of eight, she meets Ms. Henderson, her sister's teacher. The brief encounter with Ms. Henderson further complicates her young life.
