On the way to a job interview, journalist Dalton Walker passes by a circus tent fire. Stopping to lend a hand, he notices an 8-year-old girl who died in the tragedy. Unclaimed by family, the coroner searches for her identity and Walker senses a story. Hired by the Tribune, a New Jersey newspaper recently acquired by a national chain, Walker's first assignment is to interview an Amish woman who left her past and became a Rockette. Intrigued by the unidentified little girl, Walker dogs the trail three months later when the girl is laid to rest in potter's field. Writing a story aimed at flushing out the mother of the child, he waits in darkness until a woman visits the grave. Following her home, he begins to unravel the mystery of the mother and the reason she refused to come forward. | ||
