Book Review By Rebecca Fitzgerald
Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon

Diana Gabaldon has produced the sixth of the Outlander Series about Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall (nee Fraser). A Breath of Snow and Ashes resumes the story of Jamie and Claire at Frasers Ridge - the family compound and home to Scottish Immigrants and sometimes wayward individuals. The year however is 1775 and Claire and daughter Brianna have already been describing to Jamie the upcoming war with Britain. The book talks about the process leading up to the Revolutionary war starting with local disturbances, such as the burnings of neighboring farms and brutal killings of the occupants and to the tar and feathering of a suspected "Loyalist" to the Crown. Nephew Ian meets with the indians and Jamie's involvement initially in persuading the indians to give their loyalty to the Crown. His own loyalty however is ultimately given to the rebels and he experiences a great deal of inner struggle as he makes the decision to go against many of his highlander friends and neighbors to support the fight for freedom.

Claire continues her work as a surgeon and she progresses with her technique and surgical instruments despite the crudeness and limitations of the times.
