Book Review By Laura Southcombe
DragonQuest by Donita K. Paul

“DragonQuest” continues the story of Kale, a former slave girl freed and assigned to be the Dragon Keeper in “DragonSpell,” Book 1 of the series. Kale's major task in Book 1 was to rescue a rare and valuable dragon egg from the evil wizard Risto and deliver it to the good wizard Fenworth.

In Book 2, we learn that the little dragon born from the egg is bound to Kale, since she has been carrying the egg, and wizard Fenworth, despite all his knowledge and wisdom, is exasperated by the young creature and cannot control it. Kale is sent for. She arrives to Fentworth's castle where she is to take care of the young dragon, Redigor, and help him to develop his talents. Those talents are many. Redigor is a meech dragon, a very special and rare species that walks upright, talks, and matures amazingly fast. When Kale first sees Redigor, he is only about five weeks old, but he already talks and reads. He is a genius, but he is still a child, Kale is explained, so he needs guidance.

Both Kale and Redigor are trained and educated by Fenworth. Then news arrives that Risto, the evil wizard, had two meech dragon eggs, not just one. The other egg has hatched, and the dragon has bounded to Risto, which means it will do anything to earn his approval and will use its talents to assist him in his wicked deeds. Kale and Redigor, who is now a head taller than her and a good warrior, are sent to rescue the other meech.
