In this sequel to Hawksong, Zane and Danica are going to have a baby, who will be heir to both the avian and serpent thrones. Both the hawk and snake people are uneasy about a half-breed inheriting the throne, when Syfka, a falcon, arrives. Syfka is disgusted by the alliance they have created, as well as the baby they will have. She claims to be searching for a missing falcon. Zane and Danica do not know if Syfka is actually searching for a missing person or trying to break the fragile peace with controversy about their marriage. Both rulers are trying to mix their different cultures with no violence, and trying to solve problems such as which city they will rule from without upsetting either race. If the falcons have decided to interfere, then all the progress they have made may be for nothing.
