Catering to Nobody by Diane Mott Davidson

Goldy (a nickname for Gertrude) Bear is a caterer in the small town of Aspen Meadow, Colorado. She needs her catering business to survive, as her ex-husband is inconsistent with child support, so when her son's favorite teacher is found dead, she unfortunately feels she has to cater the postfuneral buffet. At the buffet, someone tries to poison her ex-husband's father, who is a doctor. Because of this, the investigating officer tells Goldy that not only is she a suspect, but that her business will have to be closed until it is determined who tried to poison Fritz.

As time goes on, and the police department doesn't seem to be making much progress on the case, Goldy decides to do some investigating herself, as she will be losing a lot of money if she can't cater during the holiday season. Goldy finds there is a connection between her ex-husband's family and the teacher who died. She also finds some other clues that no one involved will talk about.

Even though it is difficult, Goldy continues to try to get information that will help the investigating officer to solve the case. She also tries to help her son deal with his feelings about his teacher's death.
