The Squire's Tale by Gerald Morris

Terence is a young, peaceful, orphan, who lives with an old hermit.   A young man planning to be a knight happens by the hermits house, and accepts Terence as his squire.   Gawain and Terence travel to Camelot so that Gawain can request to be knighted by King Arthur.   On the way there, they meet Tor, another young man hoping to be a knight.    When they get to Camelot, King Arthur knights Gawain, but not Tor, because he has yet to do a great deed.   During a feast held while Sir Gawain, Terence, and Tor are there, a white hart bounded into the room, chased by a hound.   King Arthur dismissed the events as if they were of little importance, but an ugly lady came in and rebuked the knights for passing by an event.   Sir Gawain started to argue with her and they were both very rude to each other.    In the end, the lady won and King Arthur sent Sir Tor and Sir Gawain out to find the hart and the hound.
Sir Gwain saw the quest of little importance, but he ran into many people who he was able to help including Sir Pelleas and Lady Ettard, who were in love, but had a few problems.    For example, Lady Ettard constantly insulting Sir Pelleas when came to declare his love to her.   Terrance met many people like Robin, a sprite, and Morgan, an enchantress.   Towards the end of their journey, after they had found the hart and the hound, they were told to walk through a river, down a path, and at the end, they met Ganscotter, The Magician.   Sir Gawain fell in love with Ganscotter's daughter.   After a few days they go back to Camelot.   When they get their, they find out that there is something wrong with King Arthur, and Terence saves the day.
