Poet Walt Whitman was born on May 31, 1819, in a village near Long Island, New York. Walt Whitman was named after his father, a carpenter and farmer who was 34 years old when Whitman was born. His father possessed a very liberal way of thinking which dramatically impacted his son's expression of thought.
The book travels through Whitman's boyhood. Before becoming a poet he manifested a sincere desire to become an orator. After his poetry received controversial reviews, he received a letter of support from Ralph Emerson. He also felt responsible for sticking with principles and let it be known of his support of Abraham Lincoln's desire to abolish slavery. His most famous writing was Leaves of Grass. | ||
