Book Review By Nathaniel Ford
1812: A Novel by David Nevin

Andrew and Rachel Jackson are madly in love with each other, but Andrew Jackson is also in love with the United States of America, and wants to protect it from its enemies. Trouble is brewing with Great Britain, over issues such as the impressment of sailors, and American neutrality in the Napoleonic wars then raging in Europe. When the War of 1812 begins, Rachel Jackson supports her husband as he does his duty, and General Jackson destroys the British army at New Orleans. The victory would transform him into a national hero, but all he really wanted was to enjoy a quite life with Rachel.
James Madison is physically small standing only 5 feet 4 inches tall. He is also a bookish man, but he is revered as the "Father of the Constitution". He has a vivacious wife named Dolley, who is renowned in Washington D.C. for her parties and decorating style. When war breaks out with Great Britain, Dolley would perform an amazing act of patriotism by saving the portrait of President George Washington from being burned by the invading British. James and Dolley Madison love each other and their country just as much as Andrew and Rachel Jackson, and both couples would express that love in their own personal ways.
