Erin McKinnon grew up on a small farm in Ireland, but she's always wanted more from life. She wants to get out of her hometown, move up in the world, and make money for herself and her family. When Burke Logan, a wealthy American horse breeder, goes with his neighbors to visit relatives in Ireland he is instantly captivated by Erin. He recognizes her need for more in life and begins to develop feelings for her. When it is time for him to go back to America he offers Erin a job overseas as his well-paid accountant.
Erin accepts his offer and moves to Maryland to work for him. But Burke wants more from Erin than just her accounting skills. Against her better judgement Erin ends up having an affair with Burke, falling in love with him, and eventually marrying him. Burke loves her, but is incapable of accepting her love in return. He thinks that he's unworthy of her due to his sordid past, and believes that Erin only loves him for providing her with the comforts she's always pined for.
