Because the Night by James Ellroy

BECAUSE OF THE NIGHT, published in 1984, is the second book of the Lloyd Hopkins's trilogy. The period is the early eighties and Hopkins is the smartest police officer of the Los Angeles Police Department, he works alone, is respected by his fellow companions and despised by his superiors.

When a well-known policeman is missing, Lloyd Hopkins is asked to solve the case. He will soon encounter John Havilland, an eminent psychiatrist whose obsession is to manipulate his patients in order to get private informations about his next victims.

Hopkins, whose wife and children has left, becomes the next target of the mad doc. In possession of Hopkins's professional file, Havilland knows for sure the weakest sides of the policeman.

A must.
