The Ghost by Danielle Steel

Charles Waterson, an architect living happily in London, is quite unprepared for the sudden end to his ten year marriage when his wife leaves him for a much older guy. To make his devastation complete, he is transferred to the New York office despite his utmost reluctance.

With nothing else to lose, he takes a long leave of absence from the office and heads towards Vermont for a few days of skiing, chilling out and thinking about his life but destiny had something else in mind for him.

Due to a blinding snowstorm, he is stranded in a small town where an elderly lady offers to rent him an exquisite lake side chateau hidden deep in the woods.

From the moment he sets foot inside the house, he could feel the presence of Sarah Ferguson, the beautiful countess who lived and died there two centuries ago and on Christmas Eve he glimpses her for the first time.

Then he found her journals in the attic and as he turns the brittle, dusty pages and learns more about Sarah and her tough life, he starts living again! He tightens his slipping grip on the rope of life. He even asks out a woman, named Francesca, whom he had met in the same small town.
