Told from rotating viewpoints, the novel relates the story of Pechorin, an effete Romantic hero who, despite his audacious lifestyle, is bored with the world and with himself. Set in the 1830's, Pechorin travels through the Caucasus mountains, riding horses, hunting, evading death and doingthings with society women.
In the town of Taman he meets a young blind boy, has a brief romance with the kid's sister and then uncovers their smuggling operation on the Kerch Straits. He is almost murdered for what he knows, but manages to escape. In Pyatigorsk Pechorin decides--just for the sport of it--to court a young princess from Moscow. He ends up fighting a duel over the woman and fleeing the area. At last he finds himself stationed at a military fort, restless, ready for another adventure, ready to break another heart. | ||
