Malka by Mirjam Presseler

Malka is a little Jewish girl who lives with her mom and her sister in a German occupied country.   Because her mother is the only doctor, she feels a sense of security, but that is ripped away from her when they are almost captured and have to run away to escape the Germans.   Malka runs with her mom and sister complaining the whole time, but keeping on going till she can't even walk.   The family finds many more people who will help them because they feel sorry for Malka, a cute little girl.

Malka, her mom, and her sister get to the final leg of their journey when Malka gets sick.   Malka has to stay with another family while her mom and sister escape to freedom, planning to come back to get her, but the family kicks her out as soon as she is well enough, and she ends up scrounging for food as a beggar.   Meanwhile, Malka's family are wondering whether she's ok.   Malka has to grow up very quickly if she wants to survive.   Will she be able to?
