No Choice but Freedom by Pat Mattaini Mestern

Joanna Showcroft is married to Talbot Showcroft, a ruthless opportunist who wooed her mainly because of her rich and influential background. They have a baby, little Luke, and Joanna is determined to take their child and go to America to join her husband, who is trying to make a go of several plantations there. Luckily, Joanna's father, Charles Turnbull,is not stupid and has made Talbot sign a prenuptial agreement that keeps the main plantation in the Turnbull name. Joanna is therefore in charge of that plantation. She is very much against slavery and is determined to help end it. She finds out, though, that you can't run a plantation without slaves. Yet, despite terrible setbacks, like the fear of being murdered by her own husband, and losing touch with very dear friends, she is able to help her slaves some to gain freedom, and some to escape a worse fate.
