| This book describes in great detail one of the most famous gunfights in all
of Western history - the battle at the OK Corral, in Tombstone, Arizona, on October 26, 1881. What led up to the shootout? Historians disagree. Mitchell Marks carefully lays out what is known. The Earp brothers - Wyatt, Morgan, and Earl - were the town's lawmen. Earlier, they had arrested the famous Doc Holliday on suspicion of being involved in a stage robbery. But apparently they had concluded that he was in fact innocent, because he was on their side in the battle. The Earps were suspicious that members of several local families were involved at least in thieving and cattle rustling and perhaps the stage robbery as well. After both sides exchanged threats, they met in a vacantlot on the afternoon of October 26. The Earps and Doc Holliday exchanged shots with the McLaury and Clanton brothers. When the smoke cleared, both McLaurys and Billy Clanton were killed and two lawmen wounded. This would hardly be the end of the story.
