Sackett's Land by Louis L'Amour

In the year 1599 Barnabas Sackett, son of a soldier and himself a farmer and fisher of the Fen-lands, becomes the obsessive object of an English Nobleman's revenge for an imagined slight and must flee England. He ends up on a ship first as a prisoner and eventually takes over as the Captain. Captain Sackett and his crew sail to the Americas and begin trading with the natives in what later becomes North Carolina.

He becomes an adventurer and a marooned trader trying to survive in an an unsettled New World.
