Karana is the daughter of the leader of the Ghalas-at. When the Aleut hunters murder her father, her tribe sails away in the vast ocean, never to return again. Only, Karana was not on that ship. She was left behind with her brother. Soon, her brother dies, leaving Karana alone.
Karana must learn to survive on her own. She waits patiently, until the day her tribe will come back for her. As she explores deep into the island, she befriends a dog and named him Rontu. Soon, the Aleuts come back, and bring with them a girl Karana's age. Karana stays hidden until the girl finds her. However, the girl leaves without Karana. Month after month Karana waits. 18 years later, a ship comes to bring her to a mission. She learns her entire tribe was killed when the ship sank. She was the only Indian left. Karana died at the mission, and was buried there. | ||
