Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen

Francis Tucket is a 14 year old boy traveling with his family by wagon to Oregon. On his birthday, he gets a rifle as a present, and stays behind the wagon for target practice. As a result, he is left behind. Suddenly he is set upon by a hunting party of Pawnees, and taken in as a 'son' by an old Pawnee woman.
Trying to settle into his new life, he recognizes a white man among the Pawnees one day. He is quickly hidden away, and the man, Jason Grimes, rescues him during the night. Francis is thrown a chaotic life of riding war ponies, escaping unfriendly Natives, and learning to live in the west. With the help of the one armed Jason Grimes, he lives up to being called Mr. Tucket.
