Dark Sunshine, the little adopted buckskin mare, is pregnant to the Phantom, and Sam is delighted with the prospect of owning the Phantom's baby. However, it's summer too, and that means it's time for the annual cattle drive. Sam doesn't know which to decide on, and is torn between looking after Dark Sunshine in case the baby is rejected, or leaving her alone to give birth, as mustangs in the wild have for hundreds of years.
But Sam finally makes the hard decision and stays. During her lonely stay, the Phantom repeatedly comes and lingers his gaze on Dark Sunshine. When the filly is born, she is wild and free spirited. Again, the Phantom comes, and this time he seems to want to take the filly and Dark Sunshine away to the wild. | ||
