| Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fell in love as teenagers, but they were torn apart by her father because Florentino was from a poor family. For two years, they secretly communicated by telegraph while Fermina's father made her travel the countryside. When she comes back to town, however, she suddenly falls out of love with Florentino. She marries a wealthy doctor and they are married for 50 years until his accidental death.
