Book Review By John Van der Kiste
Those Who Serve by Marcia Willett

Cassandra and Kate are best friends at school together and their friendship endures throughout the years to come. The blonde and beautiful Cassandra marries Tom Wivenhoe, while the more serious, fiercely loyal Kate marries Mark Webster. Both men work on submarine bases, and they all make their homes near a submarine base on the south coast of England. Among their closest naval friends are Mark and Felicity Mainwaring, the bachelor George Lampeter who has a brief and unhappy affair with Felicity, and Ralph and Harriet Masters.

Cassandra's marriage seems serene enough and she has four children, Charlotte, Oliver, Saul and Gemma. Kate has twins, Guy and Giles, but her marriage breaks down after her husband's mental cruelty. Meanwhile Cassandra becomes restless and has one affair after another, and one of them, with lawyer Nicholas Farley, has tragic consequences involving her eldest daughter Charlotte, who is horrified to discover the extent of her mother's infidelity.
