Sir Richard Blythe's family's estate was taken from them during the English Civil War. Now that the royal family has returned and reclaimed the throne, Richard, whose family were loyalists, wants his estate back. But it was sold to Elissa Longbourne's late husband, and now she has her young son live there. In an attempt to solve the problem, the king orders Elissa and Richard to wed so both can live there. The two are attracted to each other but resist falling in love.
