Book Review By John Van der Kiste
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse

Bertie Wooster wakes up one morning in his London flat to discover he is suffering from an unsightly rash with spots all over his chest. Going to see his doctor, he bumps into Vanessa Cook, who had turned down a proposal of marriage from him the year before, and her new boyfriend Orlo Porter, a former friend of his from Oxford and left-wing zealot. They are leading a protest march which holds Bertie's journey up for a while. Porter hops in the car to escape the police and tries to sell Bertie some life insurance. At the surgery the doctor tells Bertie the spots will go away, but says has to spend a few quiet days in the country.

His plans to go and stay with Aunt Dahlia fall through when she says she is also going away, but she offers to find a cottage somewhere quiet where they can be together. They choose one in Maiden Eggesford, but peace is shattered soon after they arrive. Bertie finds that racehorse owners and bitter rivals Jimmy Briscoe and Pop Cook, Vanessa's father, and their respective horses, Simla and Potato Chip, are there too. When Pop Cook finds Bertie tickling his cat, and Aunt Dahlia asks a gentlemanly neighbourhood poacher to steal the animal, Bertie is blamed. He ignores Jeeves' advice to get away from the place, and to his horror finds Vanessa and Orlo are falling out with each other. He fears that she is on the rebound, and that she will ask him again if he will marry her. Once again, it will be Jeeves' task to extricate him from the predicament.
