Fay is the last child of a family of eight. She is four years old at the beginning of the story but at the end she is a young woman of twenty. Life with her mother and siblings is difficult indeed but in a way she is happy. She enjoys playing with her friend Stompy.
Life changes when her mother's eldest daughter Flo comes to visit and decides to take Flo to visit her in Kingston. This visit last sixteen years. Flo pretends that Fay is actually her daughter and changes her name to Clara. When Flo's boyfriend - Finger - who is a fisherman meets an accidental death, Flo and Clara's economic situation goes rapidly downhill. Clara is subjected to violent attacks from Flo and witnesses not only police brutality but the violence that people impose on one another.However, occasionally amidst the squalor there is an oasis of kindness - like the kindness shown to Clara by the drug dealing Cokee. | ||
