The Cat Who Came for Christmas by Cleveland Amory

Cleveland Amory, a writer, animal rescuer, and the founder of Fund for Animals, tells the story of his cat, a stray he had named Polar Bear. It was on a snowy Christmas night that another animal rescuer took Mr. Amory to the building where this sick, starved, and abused cat had found its refuge. The owner of the building had given orders to get rid of the cat, so the poor fellow's time was running up.

Mr. Amory rescued the cat (who did not know he was being rescued and therefore scratched him bad in the face). Having never owned a cat before, Amory did not plan to keep this one. He brought the stray to his apartment and immediately started looking for a home for him. However, the cat captured his heart. Having soon realized that Mr. Amory was not going to hurt him, the cat instantly changed from a violent hisser and scratcher to a calm, trusting fellow. He even allowed Mr. Amory to wash him, after which it was discovered that the cat was all white. When a woman came to take him, Mr. Amory knew he no longer wanted to give this beautiful cat away.

The book goes on to describe Polar Bear's personality, his relationship with his owner and other people, his tricks, and how his entrance into Mr. Amory's life changed it. We also get to read about some other animals, rescue stories, and Mr. Amory's work of a rescuer.
