Book Review By Hannah Warnaar
The Corinthian by Georgette Heyer

Richard Wyndham, notorious Corinthian and excellent match for any social-climbing lady, is being pressured from all sides to marry Melissa, the seemingly perfect but snobby daughter of a family friend. So when he stumbles upon a lovely young heiress fleeing from an arranged marriage, Richard sympathises with her and feels obliged, for the girl's safety, to escort her to her destination.

Penelope (Pen) is set on marrying a childhood friend with whom she exchanged wedding ‘promises' at the age of fifteen. But when Richard and Pen arrive at their destination, they find young Piers engaged to another girl – apparently he has forgotten the childish promises they made years ago. Pen isn't as unhappy as she thought she would be – she never actually loved Piers. In fact, the person she has come to love is Richard…

Richard has also fallen in love with the lively and friendly Pen – so when their journey ends, he proposes to her. Pen, however, thinks that Richard is only proposing because they have spent almost a week in each other's company – which could be perceived as scandalous if it were ever discovered. Richard becomes desperate – he would never be able to marry the cold Mellissa after being around warm-hearted Pen…
