The Girl in the Mirror by Belinda Hayes

Meryl Jacks is an overweight girl who has an utterly low self-esteem and finds it hard to fit in. Her "friends" at school use her, and she really wants to lose some weight. As a solution to this problem, she starts swimming everyday at the pools and increases her laps everyday. Meryl begins to become fitter and the fat is turning into muscle. She does the swimming alone, until she meets this guy, Darren, who is extremely thin and has spent a lot of his life in hospital. They start to swim together. At first, Darren is unconfident and needs to be encouraged, but as he starts to get the hang of it, Meryl becomes interested in him. He has a typical hot body, one that any girl would dream to have. When Meryl meets Emily, a girl who is new and everybody hates too and has AIDS, at first Meryl and Emily are on shaky ground, however as they develop a solid friendly relationship, they become good friends and Meryl tells Emily about Darren. Meryl invites Emily to swim with her and Darren everyday, but Emily is unsure. When Meryl takes Emily to a cafe where Darren is, Emily meets Darren and she grows extremely fond of him and likes him very much. When Emily attends a dance, she wants a date - and who does she choose to be her date? Darren! Meryl is exceedingly jealous of this, however attempts to disregard it as much as possible. It gets too much and she breaks down. Does Darren tear Emily and Meryl apart or do they both find away around their "love at first sight?"
