Set in the imaginative world of the Edge, a world built upon a ship-shaped continent jutting out into an endless void, this is a story about a group of refugees fleeing Undertown, an overcrowded, industrialized city that was destroyed by a demented villain in a fit of vengeance with a dark maelstrom that has ravaged a considerable part of Edgeworld. Now all those who lived there, gnokgoblins, cloddertrogs, woodtrolls, waifs and many others are forced to flee across Edgeworld in search of the Free Glades, a land where they can settle in peace. Among them is a young librarian knight, which is a warrior sent out to explore new lands. The expedition is led by the Most High Academe Cowlquape Pentephraxis.
As they try to get across first the Mire (a vast, dangerous region covered in polluted muck created by Undertown) and then the Twilight Woods (which create hallucinations in people who venture into them), they find danger not only from the native wildlife, but the Shryke Sisterhood of the Eastern Roost, who having lost their trade with Undertown, descend upon the people seeking to either devour them or sell them into slavery. Even after they make it to the Free Glades, their troubles are only beginning. Deep in the smoky, fiery nightmare that is the Foundry Glades, Hemuel Spume (who is allied with the Goblin Nations) is plotting to make the refugees struggling to build a new world in the Free Glades slaves for his factories. This development leads to the climatic battle, in which the Free Gladers must rally to defend the freedom they worked so hard to build. | ||
