Ann Bernett is married by proxy (without his permission or wishes) to Aden (Lord Tybol). She travels to Scotland to meet him and tell him they are married. He does not want a wife nor can he have one now that he is smuggling gunpowder for a rebellion in Scottland due to the practice of throwing poor people off their land. He plans to send her away but can't force her to leave once he finds out she has nowhere else to go. He vows to make her want to leave by giving her lots of work around the castle.
