Evil Encounter by Sonia Levitin

Evil Encounter is a teen novel about the surprising death of Luke, the strange psychologist.

Michelle's mother nad father have recently split up, and Michelle moves with her mother to California. She attempts to keep in contact with her father, but constantly reaches his answering machine instead of being able to speak with him. Michelle becomes depressed, battles fits of insomnia and is soon referred to a therapy group by one of the teachers at her school.

This therapy group is very different from what Michelle imagines, and she soon finds it a joy to be there. She knows it must be everything that Luke does that makes it such a sheer joy. Michelle invites her mother to come along on a weekend trip that the whole group is taking. When her mother agrees and then needs to back out at the last moment, Michelle is upset but still agrees to attend the long session. But things go drastically wrong and Luke is murdered. Michelle is shocked to find out her mother is accused of his murder! She knows she must do everything in her power to help find her not guilty.
