Book Review By Laura Southcombe
The Amazing Bone by William Steig

A little piggie named Pearl is walking home from school. It is summer, and the weather is lovely, so Pearl is not in a hurry. She stops to enjoy flowers and other sights, and during one such stop she finds a magic bone. The bone is alive, it can talk and imitate any sound. The bone says that it fell out of a witch's basket, and it does not want to go back. Pearl is happy to keep the bone. She picks it up and continues on her way.

When masked robbers attack the little piggie, the talking bone proves to be very helpful. It hisses like a snake and roars as a lion, scaring the robbers away. Pearl is saved. However, there is another danger awaiting her. A fox sees the unprotected piglet girl and decides to have her for dinner. When the fox approaches, the talking bone is trying the same trick to drive it away, but he turns out to be smarter than the robbers. The fox wants to see what's making the scary noises, finds the bone and takes it away. Then he kidnaps Pearl and locks her up in an old shack.

Pearl spends a few troublesome moments locked up, all alone, and with no talking bone to comfort her. But when the fox comes back, with the bone still in his pocket, the talking bone comes to the rescue again.
