The Wild Baron by Catherine Coulter

Rohan Carrington, Baron Mountvale receives mysterious letter and sets off to discover that his deceased brother, George, has left a wife and daughter behind. Rohan takes his sister-in-law, Susannah, her daughter and little brother back to his estate, Mountvale. Shortly after arriving a man breaks into the house and leaves a second story window open so the young daughter, Marianne, can climb out onto the balcony and endangering her life. Susannah then confesses to Rohan that this has happened 3 other times. Each time the housebreaker has torn the place apart looking for something of George's. Rohan confesses to Susannah she wasn't really married to George. She had shown him the marriage certificate and it had been signed by a man who Rohan knew performed bogus marriages. To hide the truth from the servants and public Rohan tells everyone that he has been secretly married to Susannah for 5 years and Marianne is his daughter. This is incredible information for the public because Rohan has the reputation of a rake, although loved by all for his wayward behavior. Together they set off to Rohan's younger brother, Tibolt. Tibolt had been aware of George's behavior and claimed Susannah a whore. He also denies any knowledge of what George owned that everyone wanted. Rohan and Susannah return to Montvale and secretly marry. They also find a map hidden in a necklace that George had given her. They return to Oxford and find the rest of the map and head to Scotland with Rohan's best friend Philip Merecult. They don't know it yet but they are on the trail of the Holy Grail. They adventure is a long one but the necklace is found.   They return to England and to London. There Susannah learns of Rohan's secret passion and vocation. She also learns more about his carefree ways and whether or not his reputation is earned.
