The Matlock Paper by Robert Ludlum

James Matlock is a well to do professor in the prestigious Carlyle University. He has a secret that “few” others are aware of – “His younger brother died due to an overdose of heroin, for which James has a deep-rooted hatred towards the people who are involved in this illicit trade”. Amongst these “few” are some face-ess men in Washington.
Trouble is brewing in Carlyle. Investigations by the justice department show that Carlyle is the focal point or the so called “headquarters” for the drug cartel in the north-east of the US. The illicit trade is under the control of an organization known as the “Nimrod”. Power of Nimrod has grown to such proportions, that it is threatening the existence of the local mafia. A secret conference between the two is going to take place in Carlyle- where agreements can be reached; in a way such that reaps of the profit from the drug trade as well as territory of operation can be divided between the two. The justice department however, gets hint of this scheduled meet, from a document that is recovered from the dead body of an individual in Turkey; this individual as records with the justice department reveal, was a distributor of drugs in the north-east of the US, operating from Carlyle. The face-less men in Washington overseeing this operation decide to use James as a pawn to get to Nimrod; their leverage –“James's Past”.
James is approached by a man from the justice department; his name – Ralph Loring. Loring feeds James with the information that the justice department has acquired over the years on Nimrod. He also gives James the document recovered in Turkey. The document is the key to the venue of the meet. What surprises James is the fact that Nimrod has infiltrated into every section of the society in Carlyle; in a way such that some of his colleagues are acting as middle men in the illicit trade. Things however, start going wrong from the very beginning. Loring is brutally murdered within minutes after his rendezvous with James.
James however, starts his investigations. But it seems Nimrod has got the air about James's motives. They try to dissuade James from pursing his quest. His girl friend is brutally tortured and gang raped, an attempt is made on James's life at a party. James however, is not deterred and he decides to unmask Nimrod by going to the very root of the organization. James uses the paper given to him by Loring as a lure to get in touch with people he believes to be involved with Nimrod and unmask them. What he discovers not only puts his own life but also the life of the girl he loves at risk.
