Judith Hampton and Frances Catherin Kirkcaldy met when they were to young to remember ever meeting at a festival near the English/Scottish border. They remained fast friends even after they learned that the English(Judith) and Scottish(Frances Catherine) were enemies. Judith promised that she would attend Frances Catherine at the birth of her first child. To that end she spent 2 years studying midwifery and interviewing the best midwife in England. When the time came Ian Maitland, Frances Catherine's brother in law and the laird of clan Maclean went to England to take Judith to the Highlands. The attraction between them was immediate though they both almost tried to fight it.
Once in the Highlands Judith finds the midwives barbaric in their practices and convinces her friend not to allow them to attend her. Unwillingly Judith finds herself a midwife and in demand by the clan's women. Judith also has a secret. A very big secret. She is half scottish herself and the daughter of the Maclean clan's biggest enemy. Ian cannot keep her out of his thoughts and finally decides to marry her. The Maclean clan is run by their council and not by the Laird. They also are a people that keep to themselves and within their clan the families keep to themselves and seldom reach out to each other. Judith finds that this is unacceptable to her and with Ian's blessing sets out to make changes. She also battles within herself as to whether or not to tell Ian about her father. She has never seen her father but she understands the political ramifications. One day after the wedding Judith is kidnapped by her father's clan. Ian set out to rescue her. He rides into the enemy compound alone and without weapons to take back his bride. Judith confronts her father and learns that her mother was even a bigger liar than she already knew. An uneasy alliance is formed between the 2 clans but when they return home Ian must face the council and decide whether or not he wants to remain the laird. | ||
