Book Review By Susan Coffey
A Time Apart by Diane Stanley

Ginny Dorris is thirteen. Her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer that needs immediate and aggressive treatment. Mrs. Dorris decides to send Ginny to live with her father in England for the summer. Ginny has only had brief contacts with her father since her parents were divorced when she was small. He is an anthropology professor who is participating in a university sponsored re-enactment of a bronze age Celtic farm settlement. Ginny does her best to participate in the project while coping with her homesickness, worries about her mother, and difficulty connecting to her emotionally distant father. She befriends Corey a 17 year-old boy on the project, and is drafted to look out for Daisy a five year-old girl. Ginny distinguishes herself as a cook able to cope with the primitive conditions. She is gradually coming to know her father.
