Breaking Point by Suzanne Brockmann

Top FBI negotiator Max Bhagat starts to fall for hostage Gina Vitagliano the first time he has heard her over a hijacked airplane's radio. After they have rescued Gina together with the other hostages, he continues to see Gina. Gina knows that she loves Max not because he rescued her and it is a matter of transference but because of who he is. However Max's fear of emotional commitment finally drives her away and she escapes to Kenya doing volunteer work.
After a year and a half, Max is suddenly faced with the news that Gina has been one of the people killed in a bombing at Germany. Together with his subordinate Jules, he flies to Germany to identify Gina's body. When he gets there, he discovers that it has been a case of mistaken identity and Gina is still alive but missing. His clues lead him to Grady Morant, an expatriated US soldier who is wanted by the US for drug trafficking and other crimes. But Grady Morant is not the enemy it seems but is trying to help him find Gina who is missing together with his wife, Molly. Their search brings them to Indonesia, where Grady Morant has many enemies especially a vengeful druglord named Chai. They find out that the women are being held hostage. They go into the location and rescue both women. However a group of armed men suddenly arrive and they are trapped in the hostage house until rescue comes. It appears that their enemies are out for revenge against Grady. Inside the house, Max finally professes his feelings for Gina while Grady tries to keep a cool head when he learns that Molly has breast cancer. Trying to wait out the army of men, Max negotiates for their lives. However one thing is clear: only surrendering Grady will free them.
