Book Review By H Louise
Stargate Atlantis: Reliquary by Martha Wells

The second in a new line of novels based on the hit television series Stargate Atlantis. Set after the season one episode 'The Defiant One' it sees the human colonists in the city of Atlantis make an exciting discovery. While exploring the unused sections of the vast and mostly uncharted city the team find a 'gate address that could lead them to a repository of Ancient knowledge.

The flagship team consisting of Lt Aiden Ford, Dr Rodney McKay, Teyla and led by Major John Sheppard, accompany a team of scientists to study the ruined city on the uncharted world. Soon after arriving, Sheppard gets a bad feeling about the place that he can't seem to shake and it doesn't dissipate when they discover an occupied stasis chamber that is about to open. The occupant inside, Dorane soon awakens and reveals that he's an Ancient. However a scientist turns up dead and the savages hiding within the complex known as the Koan are soon blamed. However to McKay and Sheppard the biggest threat comes from the rest of their team who become compromised and turn against them.

Somehow under Dorane's control he uses them to infect Sheppard with a virus that mutates his Ancient gene. Once infected Sheppard is left on the planet to die with McKay while Dorane returns to Atlantis with his minions and the brainwashed humans. Once in Atlantis he slowly takes control, with only a few pockets of humans in a position to offer resistance.

McKay is able to free Sheppard but finds him slowly mutating, growing claws on his hands and spines on his ears. The duo have to work fast to help Atlantis before Sheppard mutates further and loses his humanity. However while Sheppard struggles to keep his identity and sanity, he discovers that the mutations have allowed him to better control Ancient technology, which could prove an advantage in their attempt to save Atlantis and their friends.
