The Girls by Amy Goldman Koss

Maya is a member of the in crowd.   The leader's name is Candace and everyone loves her, all of her opinions become everyone else's.   Everything she does is mimicked by them. When she is mean, they just laugh and consider themselves lucky to have a friend like that.   One of the other members is Renee, who is quiet.   Her parents are divorcing so she is relying more on her friends.   Then there is Brianna who does what Candace says, but also thinks about her actions.    Finally, there is Darcy, Candace's “best friend.”   She loves Candace and obeys her like a dog.
Maya is happy with her life until one day she finds out that her group is having a sleepover and she wasn't invited. She knows that means she's out, but she doesn't know why.   Neither do the other girls ask Candace because that would make it seem like they were on Maya's side.   Renee thinks back to all the times that Maya acted like a good friend, like the time that Maya helped her conquer her fear of heights.   She feels bad for just dumping Maya, but thinks it might be something personal to Candace that caused this sudden change.   Brianna wonders what's up, but doesn't want to think about it.   Darcy is always on Candace's side, but when her sister implied that what they were doing was mean, she instantly picked up the phone and pranked / dissed Maya.
The next day as the sleepover ended, Candace was picked up first, then Brianna.   That left Renee and Darcy together.   Renee decided to ask Darcy why Maya was out, but since Darcy didn't know, she pretended like it was a personal secret that she could not share about Candace.    Renee used that as an excuse not to call Maya for the rest of the weekend.   When Candace got home, she called Brianna and asked her to come and help her baby-sit.   While they are babysitting, Brianna admits that she likes Maya and doesn't want to dump her in such a mean way.   Candace doesn't take this well and leaves Brianna babysitting by herself.
The next day on the way to school, Renee and Maya almost end up walking together , but Maya hides, so Renee goes to stand with Candace and Darcy.   She finds out that they are all mad at Brianna, but she doesn't understand why.   Then Brianna comes and it is made very clear that she is out as well.   Maya goes along facing her day, but Brianna hides at the nurses until lunch.   Lunch is the time that they will all have to be near each other and Maya and Brianna will either have to find new friends very fast or face Candace and what is left of her group.
