Book Review By Lydie Barquet
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler

Jocelyn, a dog-breader, and matchmaker, starts a six-member book club devoted to Jane Austen.
Bernadette, is the eccentric and oldest member, age sixty-seven. Sylvia is a friend of Jocelyn whose husband has left her. Allegra is the lesbian daughter of Sylvia, and recently single. Prudie is the youngest, and a real fan of "Emma". Grigg is the only man and, oddly, a science fiction fan.
Each session approaches one of Austen's novels, together with a chunck of life related to the hosting club member.
In March, the group reads "Emma", and we are treated with Jocelyn teenage escapades as well as the story of her friendship with Sylvia. In April, the subject is "Sense and Sensibility", and the story of Allegra's girlfriend betrayal (she milked Allegra's personal life for stories). Then, the club reads "Mansfield Park" with Prudie, "Northanger Abbey" with Grigg, "Pride and Prejudice" with Bernadette, "Persuasion" with Sylvia.
As if reading Austen worked some magic, the love life of the different characters is positively affected by each reading.
