The Best of Both Worlds by Suzanne Enoch

Charlotte Birling lives a simple life amidst London's busy society. Because of the scandal caused by her cousin that has linked with their name a few years ago, Charlotte's mother is overprotective of her. To prevent any more scandal to their name, her mother chooses a quiet unappealing boring man Lord Herbert Beetly as her fiancée. But secretly Charlotte daydreams of being with the dashing handsome Xavier, the earl of Matson.
Xavier has been cooped up in his family estate working to make it prosperous for almost over a year. He returns back to London to look for a wife. He has long given up looking for an intelligent and deep woman until he overhears Charlotte sticking up for her own beliefs instead of going with what the ton is saying. Xavier finds Charlotte intriguing and attractive. But with a fiancée on her side, he stands no chance of gaining her attention. He asks for a friend to give him a list of eligible women. In the end, he finds no one more suitable and attractive to him than Charlotte. Charlotte has great character and sense of humor that he doesn't find with other women. When he pays calls to Charlotte however, both her parents disapprove of him. With his reputation as a rake, Charlotte's parents forbid her to see him as this may give them the scandal they have been avoiding. Despite her parents' refusal for the match, Xavier finds a way to secretly meet with Charlotte and he sets out to prove also to her parents that he is sincere in his intentions by paying Charlotte calls everyday even though they won't let her see him. Charlotte reciprocates his feelings and tries to convince her parents but her parents still insist that she marry Lord Beetly. Charlotte and Xavier both agree that they sleep together so that her parents can't do anything but marry them. Sleeping together makes them realize the depth of their love for each other. They could have eloped but Charlotte doesn't want to hurt her parents' feelings or cause them a scandal. Charlotte completely trusts Xavier that they can find a way to be together. Xavier, being desperate to marry Charlotte, announces boldly and publicly their betrothal. Charlotte's parents finally realize the rightness and sincerity of their feelings and they both finally give them their blessing.
