| Lionel Morgan, Earl of Denbigh, has given up on the concept of love after being dumped by the woman he loved, Alice. To make matters worse, Alice flees London and kills herself at a countryside inn, leaving a suicide note for Lionel. It is one year later and the Earl is heading to his countryside estate to reunite with his younger crippled sister Olivia and to meet his 17 year old American ward, Charlotte Edgerton. Once the Earl lays eyes on Charlotte, aka Charlie, he realizes that his hopes of marrying her off to the highest bidder is in question. Charlie is a tomboy who thinks nothing of wearing mens' britches, riding bareback and voicing all of her controversial opinions. The Earl is quite annoyed to find that Charlotte is encouraging his staid sister to live a more adventurous and passion-filled life. Knowing that Charlie is nothing but trouble, the Earl vows to transform her into a lady and play matchmaker between Charlie and a rich member of the ton. Charlie is infuriated by the Earl's sour demeanor and his jaded view of life, yet she is strangely attracted to him. As the Earl transforms Charlotte into a debutante and introduces her to society, he finds that he may not be able to live without the irrepressible young lady.
