    Tristan, the Earl of Stanhope, is a man's man, a top notch sportsman and extremely successful with the ladies, in consideration of these attributes he has been given the nickname "The nonesuch". Calista Ashton, is the granddaughter of a duke and sister to a country vicar, she is also considered firmly on the shelf at twenty four. Calista is known for being a dowd and an opinionated scholar. Their two fates collide due to Tristan's dandified cousin, Ossie.
   Ossie, who has been banished to the country for a month due to his outlandish behavior at a ball, decides to spice up his country stay by establishing a bet that he can get a local country girl, Calista, to marry him within the month. When Tristan hears of the bet put into the books at the local gaming club, he feels it is his duty to travel to the country and save the young lady in question from ruin.
   Tristan gives his reason for traveling to the country is to buy a filly from the local nobility, but an aspiring mama thinks he actually wants to marry her daughter, so she sets up a month's worth of entertainments for the Earl, only to later learn real reason he is there, and poor Calista is forced to help with entertainments.
   Calista, who is the first to meet the Earl is instantly attracted to the him. Although sensible to a fault, Calista cannot help but find herself attracted to Earl due to his sharp wit and good looks. Tristan, who is has known for his womanizing ways, finds himself falling deep in love with Calista instantly, he loves her sharp mind and her horrid clothes.
   As Tristan actively pursues Calista, she thinks he could not possibly be interested in her seriously, and the local matrons continuously throw a wrench in the works, so there daughter may have a chance at the Earl. As many misunderstandings arise, Tristan fights to prove that his love Calista is as true as the love she harbors for him.
