Maggy's Child by Karen Robards

Magdalena “Maggy” Garcia grew up together with Nick on the slums of Portland. They are inseparable when they have been young. They tell each other secrets, be each other's champion and protector. They eventually become lovers when they have been older at the age of 18. Suddenly Maggy finds herself pregnant and Nick is nowhere to be found. Desperate, she accepts wealthy man Lyle Forrest's offer of marriage when he sees her crying one day. Maggy thinks that Lyle is a decent man and the money he brings will surely secure her and her baby's future. She marries Lyle. At first she doesn't mind the constant lessons she receive from Lyle's mother to learn all the decorum and manners she needed as a wealthy and prominent man's wife. She doesn't complain also with the generous items she has received to complete her image. But after she learns everything she needs to know, the nightmare begins. Lyle beats and abuses her at the slightest provocation or opposition from her. He dotes on her son and sees through his upbringing as a Forrest child without any input from her. He manipulates her son into disliking her. Even with these circumstances, Maggy refuses to leave Lyle for the sake of her son. When Nick suddenly returns, all her resentment and bitterness are now directed at him. However despite the negative feelings, the passion they always feel for each other still burns strong.
Nick returns back to Maggy to claim her again even if she is married. Working as a federal agent, he investigates into Lyle's illegal business activities hoping to put the man in prison so he can get Maggy and her son. But Nick sees a different Maggy from the way she has been when they were young. He senses that Lyle has something to do with Maggy's defeated outlook in life. Nick's reappearance in Maggy's life stirs up dissension between Maggy and Lyle. Lyle turns jealous and inflicts pain on his wife. When Nick finds out that Maggy is being beaten, he is furious and he takes away Maggy with him to his place. There he confesses his feelings, what happened in the past to Maggy. He tells Maggy that she doesn't have to go back to Lyle for he will protect her. Maggy relies on Nick's strength and she requests that he brings back her son too. Nick incriminates Lyle on a series of federal offense. And while Lyle runs from the police, his car overturns and he is thrown into the river and is presumed dead. Maggy is relieved that her troubles are over. Nick can finally be together again with Maggy and his son. Just when their lives turn peaceful, Lyle reappears and kidnaps her son. They chase after them and with the help of fate and her son, Lyle is shot dead and they are all reunited again.
