Book Review By Katharine Schwab
Of Sound Mind by Jean Ferris

Theo Dennison is not a normal high school senior. His entire family is deaf. He has grown up with two languages: sign language and English. His mother Palma is an artist, and the only interpreter she will use is Theo. Theo thinks that she is a prima donna, and hates having to make extra phone calls for her when she has an art show coming up. Theo's father, Thomas, hates to ask Theo for help, and for this reason, Theo doesn't mind helping him. Thomas is a carpenter, and his hands are very important: they are his way of communicating and making a living. He does his best to help his little brother Jeremy with his homework and anything else he needs because Palma won't do it. One day at school, Theo sees a girl rapidly signing to herself. He does his best to stay away from her, not wanting another deaf person in his life. However, when he finally meets her, he discovers she can only sign because her father is deaf. Her name is Ivy. Because they both speak sign, the two of them become fast friends. Theo discovers that she is an amazing cook and a food historian and spends many afternoons working in her kitchen. He becomes the brawn behind her catering company Flying Food, while she is the brains. Ivy and Theo become inseparable. Also, Ivy's father and Thomas and Jeremy become friends and spend their afternoons working on model airplanes together. However, when Thomas suffers a stroke, Ivy and Theo's friendship is tried. Can Theo and Ivy pull it together? Will Thomas ever regain the use of his hands?
