All I Ever Needed by Jo Goodman

According to gossip, Gabriel Whitney "East", Marquis of Eastland, is engaged to Lady Sophia Colly. But it was his mistress who started the rumor because he had mentioned Sophia was exactly what he did not want in a bride. He thought her beautiful but cold. He goes to meet her and proposes because honor demands it. She tells him he is a drunkard, gambler, and murderer to forestall him from proposing. But he proposes anyway and she turns him down sharply and he leaves. He is not as relieved as he should be and shortly thereafter discoveres his lemonaide was drugged. He is sure she is not involved. When she dissappears for a month he discovers she is being kept in her room by her cousins to force her to marry but she refuses him again. East later goes to her cousins estate to negotiate for an East India settlement and meets Sophia again. She is worried that her cousin will force East to marry her through some compromise. She is being tortured by her cousin as punishment and East takes her away to stay with his sister and that's when the real trouble starts.
