Michael Chamberlain, a minister, his wife Lindy and their three children are on holiday in the northern part of Australia. One night, close to Ayers Rock, a dingo creeps into their tent and snatches the little Azaria, their three weeks old baby. Only the clothes of Azaria are found and soon this case enthralls the whole country. The Chamberlains agree to give many interviews but their words are often misquoted. Persistent rumours according to which Azaria would not have been the victim of a dingo but assassinated by her own mother start to circulate. A first trial clears the Chamberlains. One year later, a second trial starts with new elements. Blood was discovered inside the car of the Chamberlains and experts assure that the clothes of Azaria were not lacerated by the fangs of an animal but by scissors. Lindy Chamberlain's haughty behaviour during the trial displeases the journalists and the members of the jury who finally find her guilty of murder although there is no proof that she assassinated her own child. | ||
