A schoolteacher for thirty-five years, Barbara Covett has led a quiet, but content life until she decides to be Sheba Hart's friend, the new pottery teacher at St. George's, England.
Early in the friendship, Barbara discovers that Sheba, forty-one, married with two children, has started an affair with an underage male student, Connolly. When Sheba is found out, arrested, put on bail, and becomes “The Most Hated Woman in Britain”, Barbara, appoints herself as her caretaker, and soon decides to be her biographer too. Piecing together bits of conversation she has with Sheba while they live together in a house borrowed from a relative, she reports how the affair started, how Sheba justified what she was doing, generously inserting her own opinions about education, boys, girls, friendship and society as a whole. | ||
