Melancholy Baby by Robert B. Parker

Sarah Markham, a student, thinks she is adopted, and hires Sunny to figure out who are her real parents Mr. and Mrs. Markahm deny having adopted Sarah, and refuse DNA testing. As Boston P.I, Sunny Randal, looks into the Markhams' background, Sarah is beaten by two men, and is urged to call off the investigation. Sunny receives a phone call from somebody with information about her case. She goes and meets them in the woods (bringing her gun and her friend Spike for protection). After neutralizing the two that had only arranged the appointment to scare Sunny off, Sunny and Spike obtain the name of their client: a New York lawyer, Ike Rosen. She meets him, and in turn he points her to another lawyer, Peter Franklin. She meets Peter Franklin, who represents Lolly Drake, a famous conservative talk-show host. He gets killed soon after. Mr Markham gets killed in Boston after receiving the results of the DNA test (He had finally accepted to be tested). Sunny can link Mr Markham and the New York lawyer to Lolly Drake. Mr Markham slept with Mrs Drake when they worked at a radio station in Moline. Could Lolly Drake be Sarah's mother? Would she commit murder?
Simultaneously, Sunny Randall deals with her ex getting remarried. To solve her issues, she starts seeing a shrink called Susan Silverman, who interestingly is Spenser's girl-friend in the Spenser's series by the same author.
